Circus, Circus - OOC
Summaries and content warnings for each prompt in the event are provided below. Please pose questions to the designated mod comment, and plot away!

➥ By the Pricking of My Thumb: 25-26 August
➥ Something Wicked This Way Comes: 25-27 August
➥ Send In the Clowns: 26 August - 2 September
➥ Lost & Found: 26 August - 2 September
➥ The Ringmaster: 26 August - 2 September

General Notes - We will be posting a State of the Game on 29 August to go over some changes that we've made based on feedback and observations, as well as to hear from all of you about how we can make the game more fun, easier to understand and engage with, and all around better! That in mind, there is a question that came up that we want to address here quickly:

Avatars vs. Entity-aligned characters. We realize this is not as clearly defined in our info pages as we would have liked it to be and we will be making updates to those in the near future to rectify that. For the sake of gameplay, a PC who has powers (with a few TMA canon exceptions) will enter the game as Entity-aligned. They are not an avatar. For the sake of gameplay, we are delineating those groups thus:

Entity-aligned - Your character has powers that are much weaker and more inconsistent than in canon. In some cases, they may not even work at all. In order to strengthen and stabilize your powers enough to use them, you must feed your Patron Entity with fear from other people, not just your own character. The feeding must happen before the power stabilization/access to powers. It's an upfront payment required to this Entity to grant you something. These characters will feel a greater or lesser pull to commit acts of terror in service of their patrons, but it's something they could, in theory, ignore. At player discretion, the instincts may be more powerful and there can even be negative consequences for not feeding your Patron. You can generally think of feeding their Entity in terms of charging a battery. Once they've 'charged' their powers they'll be able to use those powers as they please for a while, but the longer they go without causing fear the weaker their powers will become until they fail completely. There's no hard and fast rule for how long that takes; we just ask that players be reflective about the proportion of fear their characters have caused in relation to their use of their powers. Characters will find they can jump-start their terror battery if they are using their powers to actively cause terror and/or horror.

Avatars - Your character has made the conscious decision to serve an Entity. It may not have seemed like much of a choice (maybe it was to serve the Entity and let them and their power save you or you will die), but it will have been a choice. These characters have access to their powers consistently (still at a non-game-breaking level). They will have them whether they feed their patron or not, but not feeding your patron has much more severe consequences on your body and mental health. You are now a main snack for these Entities, and you can either feed them other people's terrors, or they will feed directly on your character, which may result in physical deterioration or mental instability, such that you are more vulnerable to monstrous instincts that urge you to cause/feed on fear.

Practical Examples - An Entity-aligned character with telekinesis wishes to lift a car to save the passengers from a flooded area. Because this is a non-terrifying use of their powers, the character will be unable to lift the car if they have not fed their Entity (flavor-wise, they may be able to rattle the car with their telekinesis, but the attempt to lift it will be unsuccessful). However, if they have previously fed their Entity enough fear to power such a feat, they will be able to lift the car even though it's a "nice" use of their powers.

Conversely, a character with telekinesis who wishes to lift a car in order to throw it and its terrified passengers into a river would be immediately able to do so (assuming that level of power is within their established limits). Actively malevolent use of powers charges those powers while they're being used, so that kind of terrorization serves as a jump-start for their "battery."

➥ By the Pricking of My Thumb
cw: wax, potential compulsion

The Fenix Down Extravaganza arrives in town! It is a traveling circus and it's setting up to the west of town after pulling into the Gloucester railyard. There's excitement in the air. The FDE is famous for its high-energy pyrotechnics and laser lights shows. Characters may find themselves enlisted by circus workers to put up posters/fliers advertising the event around town. There's $100 in it for those who agree. There's also, potentially, a strange compulsion to paper the whole town with the adverts. Who can put up the most? Maybe you'll even find yourself fighting with someone for flier turf.

➥ Something Wicked This Way Comes
cw: large-scale vehicular collision, industrial disaster, fire, harm to animals

Finally, some answers! Those who have been dutifully researching since the crash that roused everyone in the TDM will be rewarded for their efforts. There are local news clippings from multiple sources (maybe your character was one of the ones to find a story) that indicate a crash occurred back in 1921 in Gloucester, a train derailment that killed more than a dozen and started fires all over town. The stories are buried behind more significant news about the economic depression, unemployment, and the lack of support for troops returning from the First World War.

Characters who are willing are asked to investigate the circus that has rolled into town as this all seems to be too much of a coincidence and are assigned partners. OOCly, players may pick their ADI-assigned investigation partners, and pairs do not have to stay together during the full duration of the event. Those who misbehaved in some way during the Sticky Wicket prompt in the July event will find themselves with either a PC or NPC-assigned 'mentor' who is meant to keep them more in line this time around. Mentors can be slipped away from, of course! But ADI's making a point of it to try to rein people in who have proven themselves to be at least a little bit untrustworthy.

➥ Send In the Clowns
cw: reference to cannibalism, fire, pain, mild body horror

Characters are let loose on the circus! There's food, games, and sideshows to be had! There's something just a little off about everything, but the workers seem to be ordinary people just doing a job… and one that pays well and gives them benefits. This is the prompt for all general carnival-style shenanigans characters may want to get up to. Just don't question why you might see 'long-pig' on the menu in a few places or why failing when you play 'The Floor Is Lava' results in momentary, excruciating pain. Look again and you didn't really see that long-pig. Check the ground and it's just some grass. Maybe you need to relax more. Just have fun.

As a note, there are no animals at this particular circus apart from some petting zoo goats. Everything is human performers.

➥ Lost & Found
cw: child endangerment/distressed parent with missing child, disorientation, hallucination

Characters have a chance to interact with the Fun House. It is a maze of funny mirrors that seems much larger than it should be. At the center of the maze is a seemingly ordinary mirror and an easy exit. Characters who find the center become 'winners' and will begin experiencing hallucinations, seeing someone they need to talk to or follow (or stalk) moving away from them. If they pursue, they will be led all around the circus until they find themselves disoriented and lost, needing help to find their bearings.

Those who do not enter the Fun House may still see some of the effects, running into those who have become disoriented, or perhaps encountering a frantic parent looking for their wayward child who seems to have just wandered off. Characters will have the opportunity to reunite the parent with their (unharmed) child once they've found them.

➥ The Ringmaster
cw: fire, pain, immolation, screaming

Characters will have access to the main act that's shown each night for the week. It features three main acts along with the Fenix Down of the Fenix Down Extravaganza. The final night features a closing act in which an NPC self-immolates, but seems to come out of that 'act' just fine, rising like a phoenix from the ashes. Characters will be able to interrogate Fenix or any of the main acts for information about who they are, what they're doing, and what's going on. Different NPCs will have different information.

A Handy Plotting Form

Hi mods! I have two questions!

1. re: the low-key creepiness happening in the circus, are the kinds of creepy incidents themed a certain way or are we free to make up any kind of incident so long as the effects aren't permanent/self contained?

2. For characters who are unaligned with any entities, is the only way to obtain powers then to specifically choose to become an avatar? Or is it possible for them to be "marked" in some way to develop powers that are entity aligned, but not necessarily full avatar? Sorry if this wording is unclear.

➥ Kate Cordello
Canon: Original Character
Housing: ADI Apt# C2 (with Bucky Barnes and Yelena Belova)
Permissions: HERE

By the Pricking of My Thumb - (The 25th) So she's going to put up fliers because a hundred dollars is a hundred dollars. It'll be a good excuse to explore the town and go into places that she hasn't been in yet. They didn't say she couldn't do it leisurely like! Maybe she meets fellow poster-paster-uppers in her journey?
Though when the compulsion kicks in, Kate's going to act a bit different. The anal-retentiveness will kick in. "What's the point of hanging them if you're not going to do it right?!" Que her ripping down posters that are only one-degree of an angle not straight. I'm open to petty squabbling and arguments.
Something Wicked This Way Comes - (The 26th and 27th) Who wants to partner with Kate and investigate? Who later wants to catch her terrorizing some mimes to restore her powers? Look. It's either feed or be fed upon, that's what her dreams have been telling her.
Send In the Clowns - (The 26th - 2nd) She does like cotton candy and carnival food. No one is going to win the ring-toss but they can try. Kate is going to go and try to pretend that the other day she didn't scare some poor innocent clowns with her powers. She can meet people playing games, scaring people, eating treats, watching shows, etc.
Lost & Found - (The 26th - 2nd) I'm gonna level with you folks, I got nada. I'm open to suggestions.
The Ringmaster - (The 26th - 2nd) She is going to want to ask an NPC a question but not the ringmaster. After seeing it the first night, Kate bolts out of the circus tent. It reminds her of what happened during the Sticky Wicket event because a punk grabbed the forbidden object and burned to death in front of her eyes.
Someone can catch her running out, looking like she's seen death and wants to know why. Or they come with her while she asks questions. Maybe someone wants to talk to the same person Kate is. I'm open to ideas!

➥ Martin Blackwood
Canon: The Magnus Archives
Housing: ADI B4 (with Jon and Elias)
Permissions: beepity boopity

By the Pricking of My Thumb - Unfortunately, any mention of a circus is going to leave Martin having a minor heart attack, considering the last time he encountered one it kidnapped his boyfriend twice and murdered some close friends. I'm thinking he might subtley be trying to take the posters down, so that could be fun for anyone who wanted to yell at him for wrecking their work or thinking he's some kind of competition.
Something Wicked This Way Comes - He'll absolutely want to be in on this! He's been doing his best to look like a Very Responsible Boy, so feel free to be partnered with him, though he'll probably be wanting to be glued to Jon so he doesn't get kidnapped (again).
Send In the Clowns - I've got no good ideas for this one, but maybe he can finally have a little fun. Or maybe he's going to punch a mannequin in the face out of panic. We'll see what happens!
Lost & Found - I deffo want to do something with this but I don't know exactly what; there's no way he'd go in there unless forced, but let's just say he's going to be on the lookout for some mysterious doors maybe everywhere very soon after. Maybe he'll have a network post warning people against knocking on a very specific door, for... reasons. Yes, reasons.
The Ringmaster - Ha Ha Ha Oh No. Again, he's going to want to ask questions, but catch him stapled to one Jonathan Sims for this bit until it's well and over. If there's anyone inconspicuous he can ask, he'll be sticking to them.

In general I deffo want to get Martin meeting more people and I know lots of people have expressed interest in him so he will absolutely be around and about- this sounds like a great way to meet new people so I'm hype!!

➥ STEPHEN STRANGE
Canon: MCU
Housing: Bonnie’s, Floor 3, Room 10
Permissions: HERE

By the Pricking of My Thumb - Putting up posters is a good excuse to nose around the town, and it’s not like Stephen will say no to the extra cash in his pocket, especially since he’s new. The compulsion will kick in at some point, though, so he will feel compelled to paper a whole alleyway in posters, and probably snark at you if you encroach on his poster-territory.
Something Wicked This Way Comes - Stephen would love to investigate and to be assigned a partner to help him do so! Let me know if your character would be interested. Or if you think your character needs a “mentor” then Stephen could probably qualify.
Send In the Clowns - I just want carnival shenanigan threads with a lowkey creepy vibe. Rigged carnival games are always a favorite of mine to thread, but spying questionable food on the menu will have Stephen basically knocking said food out of everyone’s hands. (Maybe not literally. Unless you want that.) I’m down for anything that might sound fun!
Lost & Found - Open to finding any disoriented characters and helping them out! Stephen would probably need to be dragged into the fun house, though.
The Ringmaster - I plan to have Stephen question one of the NPCs, though I’m leaning towards Fenix. I’m open to sharing this thread with his investigation partner if all parties are interested.

Overall, I’m pretty flexible. Stephen is new so I’m eager for any CR opportunities — if you had something more specific in mind, just hit me up!

➥ Jeff
Canon: Original
Housing: Bonnie's (Floor 2, Room 5)
Permissions: HERE

By the Pricking of My Thumb - Jeff needs money for the super sick Fender he's got on layaway, so yeah he's going to grab a stack of fliers and go to town. Once the compulsion to really advertise kicks in, he might even start singing some tunes about the circus while busking. I'm all for getting into a petty turf war with someone, or someone maybe rescuing Jeff from getting punched in the face by another aggro advertiser. Who knows, maybe the hippie bard will go totally feral.

Something Wicked This Way Comes - Okay, so while he didn't deliberately misbehave during the Sticky Wicket assignment, Jeff definitely proved himself to be easily distracted and impulsive. I would love for him to have a mentor to stress out work with, because this is one of my favorite dynamics. Just let him wander off and befriend the carnies, it'll be fiiiiiine...

Send In the Clowns - I don't have any specific ideas here, but I absolutely want to do spooky carnival antics. All the little creepy things will put Jeff in a pretty bad headspace, because it'll brush against some trauma from home that he's been doing his best to suppress and ignore, which will dovetail nicely into the next prompt:

Lost & Found - HALLUCINATIONS AND DISORIENTATION, or: Jeff's everyday existence before he appeared in this world. He's going to get caught up in the Fun House, and it's going to hit him hard. But what I'd really love to do is use this as an opportunity to have Jeff spread a bit of hysteria or disorientation (with magic; empathic manipulation/intoxication is one of his go-to spells) while he's wandering the circus in his hallucinations' footsteps. If someone wants to get swept up in his spell, or put a stop to it, I'm 100% all for it!

I just really want to use this as an opportunity for him (deliberately? unwittingly? WHO CAN SAY) do some bad shit with magic and creep a little closer towards the Spiral.

The Ringmaster - I haven't thrown Jeff at any NPCs yet, so this could be fun! He can be the Good Cop to somebody else's Bad Cop. Or the... spacey hippie cop who might try to befriend everyone. (I'm figuring this prompt will happen before Jeff loses his shit at the Fun House)

In the flier prompt: would the compulsion only manifest as the act of putting up fliers here, there, and everywhere, or can it also express itself in different ways?

FOR EXAMPLE, hypothetically, would a musician feel compelled to make up a cool song in tribute to the circus and perform it while busking, or would the sole compulsion be the physical act of covering everything in fliers?

➥ Andrew Jaeger
Canon: Original
Housing: ADI Housing, A2
Permissions: HERE

By the Pricking of My Thumb - A job is a job and Jaeger needs the money, so he'll be reluctantly putting up posters for the circus. He'll be, as always, very neat and precise about it, spacing them evenly and making sure they aren't crooked. Okay, maybe he can fit one more on this storefront. No, two, so they're an equal number on each side. Wait, he could start another row that would form a perfect pyramid!
Something Wicked This Way Comes - As Jaeger is new to the town and ADI, it makes sense that he might get assigned a mentor just to get him settled in and acquainted with things, so I'm totally open for that for him. Particularly since he's interested in the train crash haunting from the start and spent a fair bit of time both responding to the original crash and doing research afterwards. He comes from a background of professional investigation and while he's sworn off using his magic for now, he's still got a good eye for checking things out.
Send In the Clowns - Jaeger is not the sort of person to just relax and enjoy something, coming from a very high-stress life before landing in ADI. So getting him to actually partake in the circus will be tricky: most of his time wandering around will be more investigation/mild bemusement at the spectacle. He might stop to indulge in funnel cakes just for the sake of nostalgia, but other than that? Big serious man. He will be interested in the sideshows, though, particularly any that might contain signs of the paranormal or cryptids...
Lost & Found - Jaeger may enter the funhouse looking for missing kids, but he's going to take some convincing. He does not like mirrors because of their magical uses and he will be so very wary about willingly walking into a place that scares people for fun.
Alternatively, I'm totally happy to have him run into someone who's been through the Funhouse or is otherwise affected by the strangeness and needs some help. He's a good, solid person for that. Or maybe your character decides to stalk follow Jaeger when the compulsion hits.
Better yet (addendum): Jaeger may go into the Funhouse looking for a missing child, and coming out with the compulsion to follow someone. Considering his Patron is the Hunt, well, he might get a little too into it...He never intended to terrorize anyone but a little compulsion goes a long way when it's literally in your blood.
The Ringmaster - Immolation has some really unpleasant vibes for Jaeger, and he'll definitely want to ask around and try and make some sense of the spectacle of the show. While it could be harmless, it's just a really creepy sort of show and he's not completely convinced it's innocent. So he'll definitely be asking around to find out what the story is and what else might be a secret display of the supernatural.

Jaeger just arrived this month, so I'm looking for new CR and helping him get settled, mostly! I'm completely open to suggestions and new faces to interact with, and while he is going to be cautious for a while starting out, he's inevitably going to be dragged into things against his will and I'm looking forward to it.

➥ Caduceus Clay
Canon: Critical Role: Campaign 2
Housing: Bonnie's, room 7
Permissions: HERE

By the Pricking of My Thumb - Caduceus doesn't really care about money enough to be motivated by $100, even if he probably should be. Definitely game to have him encounter some manic flyer posters though!

Something Wicked This Way Comes - While he didn't do any research in the last event, he was pretty well behaved when retrieving the artifact, so if someone would like a very easy-going mentor and/or babysitter, Caduceus is happy to oblige.

Send In the Clowns - He has never been to a carnival, someone please take him! Caduceus would definitely investigate on his own. He's a vegetarian, so long pig might sound really weird, but he wouldn't be inclined to investigate further. But he's here to try cotton candy and try games. What the heck is up with the Floor is Lava??

Lost & Found - After going through the hall of mirrors, Caduceus will see one of his sisters and try to catch up to her. Or maybe it's--wait, was that his mother? Or maybe it's someone from his adventuring party. Hard to say, but he's worried and he knows he needs to catch up to them. Disoriented and alone, he'll likely end up on the ground, kneeling or sitting, and trying hard to regain some sense of balance and a grip on reality. Please feel free to help him snap out of it.

The Ringmaster - He'll be fascinated by this performance. Caduceus knows people who work with fire often, and he knows it is possible to be surrounded by fire and still untouched (at least, if you know that magic). It wouldn't necessarily occur to him that the performance is anything but that: some nifty magic and showing off. Wizards are like that. That being said, if anyone wants to watch with him and voices their suspicions, he might have some.... not-so-comforting stories or reassurances. And he would be invaluable for interrogating NPCs: his perception and insight are intense, so he generally knows if someone is lying or hiding something. He might not know questions to ask, but he can tell a partner they're on the right track or otherwise provide insight after a conversation.

➥ Keith
Canon: Voltron: Legendary Defender
Housing: ADI A3
Permissions: HERE

By the Pricking of My Thumb
I'm tentatively down for stupid competitive hijinks. Like if our characters made it a competition to see who could put up more posters at the police station without getting caught, lol. Not looking for more than one of these threads though, so lmk if you'd like to play this out!

Something Wicked This Way Comes -
Keith is definitely going to be nosy about this circus. But also? He was not a particularly well behaved bean on the Sticky Wicket incident (thanks Aelwyn) and will get paired up with a mentor make sure he's behaving responsibly. If anyone wants to jumpstart CR by dealing with Keith at the circus, I'm down.

Send In the Clowns
I'm open to gen circus fun! Playing carnival games, winning prizes, getting temporary tattoos/face paint, trying to free the circus lion because it looks sad -- all that jazz. I'm also down for some fucked up weirdness. So if you'd like Keith to slap a hot dog out of your hands, or win you a teddy bear that's full of centipedes, I AM HERE.

Lost & Found
I am tempted though unsure which direction to take this prompt. Considering maybe thinking he sees Haggar or Zarkon running around the circus and very insistently chasing after them to try and kill them. But I could also go the sad route of Keith thinking he sees his dead dad and just generally trying to get his dad's attention like a sad pupper. Either way, he'd very much like to be snapped out of this and would appreciate the help. Not looking to do this prompt more than once, so again lmk if interested! Oh. I also forgot the shitpost route of seeing the most important figure of all in the mirror: The Mothman.

The Ringmaster
Gosh, Keith is not going to react well to watching anyone immolate so if anyone wants to be there for some freakout where he tries to find water to extinguish the dude... /points at eyes, points at you. Also he will be very inclined to talk to the NPCs since so much about the circus was weird, so if there's any interest in a mentor being there while this happens that could be fun also!

➥ SATORU GOJOU
Canon: Jujutsu Kaisen
Housing: ADI A2
Permissions: HERE

By the Pricking of My Thumb - When Gojou is given a task he goes all out. He will be going so far as to papering over other people's fliers, even though they're for the same exact thing. Even when the person is right there.

Something Wicked This Way Comes - I want him to be one of the people who found info. He's better at things like research than he would appear. He sure as heck acted up during the sticky wicket, so he needs a mentor real bad. He's going to be grumpy as hell about it, though. He doesn't need a babysitter, in his eyes (all six of them).

Send In the Clowns - Gojou is scared of clowns. And goats. So he won't do well at this circus. He'll most likely spend a lot of it pouting in a corner.

Lost & Found - He's very good at finding his way, so he'll find the center of the maze. He'll also sure as heck track try to track down that hallucination. His Eyes will function a little and tell him it's not real. So why is he tracking it down? Because in his world, what's 'not real' still has substance. So expect a very disoriented Gojou in the end.

The Ringmaster - I'd like him to have his first episode of feeding the Entity. Because he would try to make the fire scarier by making comments about it. So I want his Six Eyes to fully function during this time because he's fed a fear. ANYONE WILLING TO BE SPOOKED?

Since his Six Eyes will be particularly well fed, he'd make a great interrogation partner - he can See what other people can't.

➥ Thackery Binx
Canon: Hocus Pocus
Housing: ADI A4
Permissions: HERE

By the Pricking of My Thumb - Alas, Binx has no thumbs...but he's still going to fall under the compulsion to hang up the fliers and will do his best. One can find him around town trying and failing to paper walls with fliers. Someone kind might help him. Someone less kind might steal his fliers and/or his $100. If asked, upon reflection he will be mystified and probably worried by the fact that he's so excited about a circus when he's never cared about circuses before now.
Something Wicked This Way Comes - Binx wouldn't have been one of the ones to discover information about the 1921 train crash. He is, however, a poster boy for ADI compliance and can be assigned as a mentor. Too bad all he can do if your character misbehaves is scold them and maybe scratch them.
Send In the Clowns - Binx will be very interested in investigating, and an absolute wet blanket when it comes to anything fun that could be magical or nefarious in some fashion. Don't play those games. Don't go in the fun house. Don't eat that hot dog. Don't, don't, don't. Not only is he a spoilsport, but his hesitance to engage will probably get in the way of actually investigating these things.
Lost & Found - Binx would not voluntarily go into the funhouse, but could chase an assigned partner in or provide help reorienting someone who's become lost. If he encounters a lost child or a frantic parent he will immediately abandon whatever else he's doing to help them reunite.
The Ringmaster - Cue a frustrated cat trying to sneak into dressing rooms during the show and getting kicked out because he looks like a very conspicuous teenage boy. Binx will not be engaging with any of the NPC threads; I may handwave (or play out?) that he actually gets himself trespassed from the circus grounds before the final performance.
