The watch is a nice one. Not excessively so, but the sort of thing that wouldn't be uncommon in any doctor's office on any of the staff. Why Carter picks it up is anyone's guess. He just... feels like he ought to. It's even easier to slide it on. As he wears the watch, Carter will find that his ability to differentiate between reality and the things he's seeing in his own head begin to blur. There's fire, smoke, heat. All around him, the world begins to burn in small ways, then in bigger. He can feel the flames, yelps when he touches them, but there's nothing really there, in spite of the burns that start to appear all over his body... in his mind. Again, no one seems to be able to perceive this burning reality where smoke fills your lungs with every breath.
And then the fire is gone, replaced by a floor covered in literal lava that burns if it touches Carter. Time to try hopping from one thing to another to avoid dying a horrible and gruesome death... or at least being in agonizing pain.
Carter can tell it's the watch. It's absolutely wrecking his ability to tell what's real, but he can't seem to will himself to take it off. Maybe someone else can? Except that it's something that burns impossibly hot to anyone not wearing it. Anyone trying to help is going to need some very heavy duty gloves. And Carter will have to deal with the sight and smell of them burning to death in front of them as they try to assist.
