Event OOC - The House That Wolfe Built (Finale)

The House That Wolfe Built - OOC
This is our Arc 3 and game finale. Characters will be entering into the Wolfe house and will not emerge until the game has ended… if they emerge at all. This event will determine who goes home/to other worlds, who stays, and what the state of this world will be when all is said and done. The mods are prepared for multiple potential outcomes, depending on character choices. The prompts to start will address entering and dealing with the house. There will be one additional prompt and poll posted on December 23rd that will decide the ultimate endgame state.

As a broad preview, character decisions will influence how powerful the Entities are in this world and how much time will have passed since they entered Dogtown. A time dilation effect will run throughout this entire event. It will feel like everyone who is going to enter Dogtown has done so by December 16th. For characters, it will ICly seem as if only a day or so has passed by the time they reach their ultimate goal and our endgame. If/when they emerge, a greater amount of time will have passed. How much time will, again, be dependent on in-character choices.

The event is designed to allow players to go wild with any and all ideas you have remaining for your characters. Always had an idea for a cool effect, but never had the chance to submit a player plot or use it in an event? Now's your chance! Additionally, there is an RNG sign up for players who might want their characters to find a little something extra. Up to four characters will be able to pick something up that will help them through one of the rooms in the house. Or, if they run into someone who seems like they need it more, they can give it away to that person.

➥ tl;dr: Characters will be facing a final set of trials within the Wolfe House. You might be able to find an item that can help you (or someone else) through at least one room if you sign up for our RNG. We will have an additional prompt and poll on December 23rd that will decide the ultimate endgame state for the world of Apocalypse How.

People of Note

Nia Lehrer (she/her) - Nia is the Warden of ADI and a recently discovered budding avatar of the Hunt. She has spent her time largely away from the office on other missions around the country or conducting the political maneuvering necessary to keep ADI's operations going and funded. She has a direct, firm, and stoic demeanor. She has long disapproved of the use of magic, and while she recognizes there are gray areas, she considers herself to be morally corrupt for using some magic-users. She plans to step down as Warden once the current situation with people coming from other worlds is resolved, and surrender herself for judgment to the next leader of ADI. Since offworlders first met her in Quarter, information has come out that Nia bent the rules of ADI by allowing the Visionary to live, rather than killing them when they became an avatar, and has most recently advocated for using fear powers to restore a teen's dismembered arm.

Milo (they/them) - A known Fae-like being and one of the oldest offworlders previously held in ADI custody. They were let out and caused a bit of a fuss but were ultimately convinced to stick around and continue maintaining the offworlder’s illusions. They have shown clear Entity ties and both befriended some Offworlders and taken the names of others. While a truly Neutral force, they’ve made it clear their interests are currently in line with most of the rest of the offworlders. For now.

Michael C. Etcher and Fortune - M.C. Etcher is an enigmatic millionaire who made headlines in September 2022 after purchasing a previously unknown painting by M.C. Escher, the famous surrealist painter… and maybe someone who created Spiral artifacts according to the Desolation avatar Fenix Down.

It soon became clear that Etcher wasn't just an art collector when a Buffalo art exhibit he helped to sponsor turned out to have some very sinister effects. He also turned out to be prominent business rival of the Vast avatar Zyrian Steel. Etcher again made headlines in July 2023 with his Imagination Station museum park. The headlines specifically noted the success of his Buffalo exhibit and not the terrible effects that some people suffered from visiting it. That month, there was also the start of construction on a miniature version of Gloucester that was funded by an unnamed and mysterious individual.

Later, when characters went to fight Zyrian Steel and stop his apocalypse ritual, a mysterious woman calling herself Fortune turned up to offer her counsel. She told those she helped that she was there on behalf of several interested parties (including her boss) who wanted the group to defeat Steel. It was heavily implied that she was an avatar of the Spiral and working for Etcher, Steel's business rival. She also told characters she might "meet [them] in that charming park near where [they] live" and that they had more important things to be doing there than dealing with Steel and his little ritual.

The Wolfe Family - A wealthy family from Gloucester and Dogtown's early days whose known members include Richard Wolfe, Benjamin Wolfe, and Martha Wolfe. The Wolfes owned much of the land around Gloucester in the eighteenth century, including a large plot in Dogtown on which they had a grand house. An artifact from the Wolfe house turned up during the construction of a miniature version of Gloucester in the summer of 2023, though the reason it was found in the center of Gloucester rather than at the house's original location in Dogtown was never uncovered. In recent months, ghosts that appeared in Gloucester offered a little insight into the dangerous nature of the Wolfes and their home, and characters suffered nightmares in which they were trapped in the corridors of a house much like the one described by the ghosts.

Events/Information of Note

  • Weird things happen in Dogtown, everyone knows it. And they've been happening for a long time. When player characters first arrived, ADI was making regular use of Dogtown as a testing ground for new recruits due to its constantly shifting but typically minor fear effects. Over the past two and a half years, however, the Entities' influence in Dogtown has grown more powerful and dangerous, and from July 2022 onward, Dogtown has been closed to the public to prevent harm to bystanders. ADI's explorations into Dogtown have continued as the area settled into a new, highly dangerous confluence of Entity influences. Creatures and effects have spilled out of Dogtown into Gloucester on a few occasions, including within the last month. In recent months, multiple people have gone into Dogtown and not re-emerged. Reyes Amador and Bonnie Gale were reported missing by Cole and the Visionary in early November, and Warden Nia Lehrer departed on a mission into Dogtown with a small team of trusted operatives a few weeks later.
  • A house stands in the center of Dogtown. Warnings from Bryn Fletcher, former baker and recently sighted ghost, told of a house at the center of Dogtown that Bryn was certain would "eat everyone." Since then, player characters have found a fence in Dogtown that could only be breached by supernatural means and discovered several methods of getting past it to the house beyond. While those efforts were already ongoing, all off-worlders received a message from ADI Warden Nia Lehrer over the private network created by Cole for communication outside of official ADI channels. The message carried a supernatural compulsion calling the off-worlders to enter Dogtown and come to the house at its center.

➥ Welcome
(cw: sudden violence, rot, swarms, choking, potential for severe injury, thalassophobia, blackmail)

Characters seem to have all made it inside the fenced area at the same time, in spite of coming in hours or even days apart. Time is strange here with the sun and stars flickering overhead. Beyond the trees, everyone will eventually be able to see a large, New England-style mansion with an enormous spiral burned into the side of it and a simple message: WELCOME :). Reaching the house is no easy feat. It seems that there really are monstrous things trapped inside this fenced area, maybe even the forces that have been influencing and reaching further and further outside of Dogtown to the world beyond.

The Entities are hungry, starving, and they want you. They will work in their own ways to try to impede characters from reaching the house. The only Entities that don't seem to be trying to block progress are the Spiral and the Web. The Web has even put out helpful little spiderweb arrows pointing characters around the most deadly hazards… if you're willing to follow the directions. Once people reach the house's wrap-around porch, they'll be safe from the Things in the yard.

Anyone trying to flee the fenced in area instead of going into the house will find that their way is impeded. The entry points they used are now blocked by twisting metal and thick, unbreakable web. The Spiral and Web really want you here.

➥ Come In
(cw: various, determinant, altered perceptions of reality, strangulation, derealization)

Characters will go through the house and experience various rooms based on Fears/Entities they might not have experienced, yet. Before they enter the first set of rooms, they will be lost in a twisting maze of corridors, menaced by People Who Are Not there. Linger too long outside the Trauma Rooms and you may find yourself touched and strangled by the People Who Are Not There. There's no pain, of course. Nothing is hurting you. But you may begin to feel… less yourself. Less Real. Do not linger too long or you may find that you Are Not There, either.

No matter if it’s one room, fifteen, or a room with multiple fears in it, the house seems hungry for the trauma of every Fear clawing for a fresh offering. Players will have full latitude to develop any Fear room they would like to inflict on their character and/or their character's CR as long as it aligns with the general nature of the Entities. By the end of this experience, every character will find themselves marked in some way by all fifteen Entities.

(NOTE: No one will be forced to play out anything they’re not comfortable with. Players are free to handwave their character passing through a specific room.)

➥ Say Hello
(cw: possible gaslighting, possible body horror, various)

Regardless of what horrors characters face, there might just be a friendly face to offer a helping hand. Milo seems to have followed the characters to the house and can be found in various rooms with any or all characters (or multiple characters) to help out how they can. Or simply offer unhelpful commentary.

The blood that mortals spill never gets easier to see.

"Nia!"

The sight of her is horrifying, there's just no other words to describe it. This woman who Rue has worked alongside of now for so many months, just collapsed in on herself and bleeding out onto the floor and pierced through by spears? Why would anyone do such a thing?

Even with such a twisted appearance, Rue is still there kneeling at her side, dress soaking through with red blood as their massive paw moves to spears sticking out of her.

"I may be able to heal your wounds, but you must keep with me. Stay awake, do not close your eyes. Oh Nia, tell me what happened? We saw your broadcast and came as quickly as we could."

[personal profile] ruevealing 2023-12-19 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well. Shit.

Even without asking for clarification, there is some part of Rue that understands what the dying woman is implying. They remember the flash of Nia's face on the broadcast, the half-healed cut above her eye, the way her eyes turned so black and deep Rue thought they might be sucked into the device.

- But she was not twisted, she had not been sharpened like this.

"Nia," Rue's big, owl eyes drag over the wounds she's bleeding from before flicking back up to catch the woman's face. They take the hag stone and clutch it desperately in a paw, recognizing it immediately. "Please - I thought we were meant to come here and stop the ritual that was being cast. That is what you instructed us to do. Tell me, what ritual were we meant to stop? There must be something we can do to help."
ruevealing: (or your feet? ♪)

[personal profile] ruevealing 2023-12-19 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
"I promise."

They've all been played, yes, but that does not mean that everything ends here. The hope that Rue has been searching for these last few months alights in their chest. They can not do much in a battle, but they can do this, to try and save as many of their friends as they possibly can.

"I will get as many out as I'm able. I vow this to you. But Nia -" Abandoning the spears in her chest, Rue instead reaches up to gently cup her cheek. Their palm is feathery and soft, the talons held so carefully to not even brush against the woman's flesh. They hum softly, that same song of their cubhood, to grant a surge of renewed strength and constitution, to soften the blow of the agony she's in.

"Why did you come here?"

During fence investigations, Elidibus will have pushed himself to Know more. Now donning a snazzy pair of sunglasses, he will aim to look for the Thing He Knows The Spiral Doesn't Want Found.

Is this a thing that I should sign up for the RNG for or should it be something I speak with mods about? Though I intend to also sign up for RNG anyway, just because it would probably play out like 'oh found a thing but I Know IT IS NOT IT' and foist it off on someone else or something. He might be a bit driven.

I see that stress on the Spiral! Though just to be sure, since he would probably think to uh... think this way: With this reference thread, if Elidibus focuses on trying to find the way to this specific useful 'something/someone/somekumquat' would it yield any potential better results or results related to the House search/RNG?

I may have misphrased myself as I was intending the question to be about this specific useful thing from the fence investigation. Though it will be fun to get a bit strayed by the logic fallacy too for a bit. C:

Will John’s technomagic arm, since it’s fueled by the Eye and the Dark, be affected by anything in the house or such close proximity to Major Entity Shenanigans?

Also same for him being a Hunt Avatar, will there be any extra effects either Hunt-related or other Entities having a grudge against the Hunt?

For the Fear rooms, how much free rein do we get? For example, can permanent changes be made to characters who are unlucky enough to enter a Stranger or Flesh room?

For the "Come in" prompt, with the whole "fears they haven't experienced are trying to leave a mark" are we talking fears that would affect them, or is every fear entity trying to have its way with everyone regardless of whether their type of fear would actually scare them?

WELCOME: What is time anyway? As a result of this conversation, Kate is arriving and is armed to the teeth with a few artifacts to boot. Sorry Winter and Yelena. The compulsion had been too strong to resist. Besides, she's upset that you both went into Dogtown without her.

She is going to try and find people to come with her. If you want your character dragged or persuaded to go Dogtown, holler at your girl.

COME IN: Kate is tied to the Eye entity. The room that she's going to encounter in the House is going to be filled with mirrors. Mirrors that show the worst traits you possess, all of your flaws and dirty deeds done dirt cheap. Venture deeper into the room and your character will see even more versions of themself, this time from the multiverse. See how bad a person your character can become or is in another universe!

COME IN: I'm ready for all of the trauma. Who wants in, baybee.

WELCOME: Well, first thing's first, who's gonna be the (un)lucky person Eda attacks after coming in via the Random Violence Tunnel?

Once that effect wears off, she'll be open to teaming up with people to fight through the Horrors.

COME IN: This one's a bit tricky, as Eda's been here long enough that she's definitely been marked by a good few Entities, and run into them all at least once. I think she has the Hunt, Web, Lonely, Spiral and Vast pretty well and truly covered. (Edit - and the Dark and the End!)

Candidates that she's had less significant run-ins with include the Corruption, Extinction, Buried, Desolation, and the Eye.

I'll definitely be doing a Flesh room, since it's relevant to her but hasn't come up too too much here.

For rooms that aren't really relevant to her I'll probably tag around to help let the house make her collect them all! (I'm picturing some kind of visitor punchcard...)

SAY HELLO: Eda doesn't trust Milo much, but she might not turn down a hand given how much less she trusts everything else. I'd be open to a more than one person npc thread!

WELCOME: Raine follows the Web's way into the house, but they will stop to help others. Theyre on a hunt for something, though. After they deal with the venomous spiders they accidentally unleashed upon themself and whomever is with them.

COME IN:
Raine has already been marked by the Hunt, Vast, Spiral, Web, Lonely, maybe the Eye, and The End. I'll definitely tag into others to fulfil some of the fears I'm having issues with (like the Stranger, Dark, Flesh, Buried) but I'm working on ideas for Desolation, Corruption, Slaughter, and I know the Extinction is "debatable," but I'm counting it. If anybody would like to plan about Peeping The Raine's Horrors, let me know!

SAY HELLO: Raine hasn't talked to Milo much since they let the fae loose. Raine is not a fan of them, but they're desperate to find ways to disrupt whatever is going on, so they might try and work something out about that. Or Milo can just annoy them.

➥ ELIDIBUS
Canon: Final Fantasy XIV Online
What ADI Department(s) Does the Character Work In?: Research, THERAPY (I think that was HR)
Permissions: HERE

WELCOME:

Elidibus won't be hesitating for long here. Open to deal with some violence if people came in through the mole hole of VIOLENCE or spider attacks because of said mole hole but he will be eager (such as he shows) to get into the house. There's something in there he Knows he needs to find.

COME IN:

Because of my intermittent early attendance there isn't a lot of on-screen events Elidibus got involved in, though he's probably been marked a few times over the months. I have three major things in mind to write in my TL and I'm happy to toss him toward others. So basically any and all events, even repeats of the ones I'm writing for my own TL are fair game.

A: Say Your Name (The Eye vs Lonely)

cw: doubts, fear of self, loss of self, nothingness

Elidibus will be trapped in a room where the Eye and the Lonely are having a slap fight colliding over the desire for their victims’ fear. The room will cause one to lose their identity and inciting fear over learning the truth about it. The more the person tries to hide, the weight of becoming nothing slowly creeps in, causing them to fade. And Elidibus may seem collected most of the time but he has fears of returning to a state he’d thought he’d escaped, inasmuch as he could. Objects scattered around the room will regale memories to the victim who will be under a compulsion to share them in some way to others/ There’s a couple ways to escape the room or be rescued from it and if no one steps in he’s likely to lean more into the Eye’s influence and push through the fear. But anyone’s welcome to try and help him out or stop by for a chat.

B: Waiting For Nobody (The Lonely)

cw: abandonment, manipulation, loneliness also see: C

Elidibus will stop in a particular room to wait and see if anyone else from his allies stop by. But the longer he waits the more his memories of who he’s waiting for get mixed up between the present collective of friends and allies and those of twelve thousand years ago. Stop by, speak to him! Try to convince him he’s not the one left behind and alone for eternity.

Hopefully you don’t stop by near the end, with a certain stone in hand or after he’s gotten one in his possession. He might just try to MAKE you into the friends he so desperately wants to come.

Note: This is not something Elidibus would ever do on his own and will only do this IF he is under the control of the Entity trying to use him to cause fear in others. Once he is free of this area, he will only be under ordinary desires to regain these lost mementos.

C: Like Stars Glistening In The Night (The Web)

cw: manipulation, memory reshaping, mental trauma, forced (mental) transformation, compulsions, FFXIV spoilers

Convocation stones are constructs Elidibus brought from his world which possess a partial concept and memories of certain individuals- including himself and Emet-Selch. All but the one representing himself have been stolen (by sneaky spiders) and scattered around the house. For him they had been nothing more than keepsakes from his world and the friends of his past, very dear to him (and his own acting as his ghostly bond-stone).

But they were twisted into something unpleasant through the way everyone arrives here. And now they’re scattered about the house. Perhaps a friendly spider points the way to one or you find it in a web somewhere. Once it’s in possession, one WILL run into Elidibus eventually (or Elidibus will run into you). There is a compulsion to know what secrets it holds, whether by using magic to try and unlock the secrets or Entity powers or simply pestering Elidibus.

But he WILL want them back one way or another. And if you catch him in a certain room (see B) after a certain point, he might show you more than you ever wanted to see.

SAY HELLO:

Hello Milo. Elidibus will be hanging out trying to remember his identity or trying to put someone else’s identity on someone else with terrible results. Please feel free to come share some short convo but probably best not to get too close. Or at least don’t bring him a stone. o_o
