Overnight, every printed and digital book, newspaper, and other printed reference material from 2020 vanishes. There is evidence of break-ins throughout town (from the very obvious to the subtle), but no sign of the (very specific) thieves can be found. Characters will find their own homes broken into if they have anything from that year. The Gloucester Public Library has put out a request for help with volunteer efforts to raise money to replace their lost goods while the police investigate. ADI higher-ups disapprove of that kind of community outreach when it might paint targets on civilians, but they won't stop anyone. Instead, ADI is encouraging its personnel to investigate Dogtown as the source of the problem.

Neil Grace, Head of Security for ADI, sends out a mass text informing everyone that a Lonely artifact was brought to Gloucester and seems to have shattered. The field agent responsible for this failed to inform anyone for several days, though. They're dealing with that now and need help. Characters are tasked with going in pairs to search the park where the shattering happened. They find crystal shards embedded in the ground and trees, causing an unnatural quiet and emptiness to fall over the park. They also find them embedded in people. Those with crystal shards in them seem to be struggling with intense apathy, the sort that surrounds them and can even start to transfer to those they're talking to. Work quickly to remove the shards or you might find yourself losing the will to do anything about the problem.

Soon after Neil's message, the network goes down. Realization spreads, however, that it's not just ADI's internal network that's given up the ghost: internet and phone services throughout Gloucester and the surrounding area have abruptly gone down across the board. What first comes across as a mere inconvenience, if a big one, soon becomes an ongoing municipal catastrophe. Local businesses limp along on a cash-only basis while banks, medical centers, and emergency services struggle to remain functional, and characters will find that they are unable to access their ADI salaries due to businesses' and banks' inability to process payments and cash advances from their prepaid debit cards. While it's possible to reach unaffected areas within a day's drive, knock-on effects and panic-buying make food, medicine, and cash increasingly hard to come by even outside the radius of the outage.

At varying rates, characters find their memory not quite what it used to be. Anything from friendships to relationships to the character’s homeworld might be forgotten overnight or slowly over time. Pam seems to be taking things poorly. She's doing her best in that HR is my Job and I Must sort of way, but troubles with the network seem to shake her significantly, whatever they might be.

→ MISINFORMED: #C2 is the last apartment that someone should break into. However, Kate is going to lose a couple of books that she likes and a cook book. She is going to notice because she is organized like that. Her stuff has been messed with, her bedroom invaded. She is not going to be happy. However, she will not go to Dogtown. That place is too dangerous. She'll participate in the public outreach instead.

→ MISINFORMED: Urianger/Books is basically this guy's OTP so he's going to want to help get to the bottom of what's going on here, and he's got that whole 'casual disregard for his own survival' guilt thing going on so heading into Dogtown at some point probably yes?
→ MISPLACED: This resonates with a lot of (from his perspective) recent canon events - crystals, and in particular crystals that can subjugate human will, are a big deal in FF, and part of the whole Fighting The Endsinger thing was using emotion to counter apathy/despair - so count him in for this as well.
→ WITHOUT A TRACE: ... welp, we sure are throwing him straight in at the deep end, huh? 😂 For someone who's identity is so closely linked to Knowing Things, memory loss is legitimately incredibly scary. He's not been here long enough to build connections yet, but hopefully his various foci can act as some sort of touchstone. Either way, between this, missing books, and some uncomfortable parallels, it's sad times for Uri and excellent ones for Coggirl who feasts on his suffering.

Mostly because I'm interested in hearing about the canon background for the crystals as I'm more canonblind than a tin of sardines. → What ADI Department(s) Does the Character Work In?: Previously, I.T. Tim 'dropped' out of the roster in the summer and upon his arrival again, he's yet to make up his mind. Help.

→ MISINFORMED: On the first day or two, he will be making use of his previous paths in cyberspace to search for patterns in the thefts, if other areas of importance are equally affected, if there's an uptick in 2020s literature going up For Sale, etc. But then...! MISPLACED! MISSED CONNECTIONS, and a very... lethargic unmotivated Jimothy.
→ MISPLACED, MISSED CONNECTIONS: I am putting these two together because there will be simultaneous effects on Tim. Tim has been granted the ability to communicate with machines/computers during a disaster that got the Eye's attention on him. The total shutdown of internet, phone, all of that, will have Tim feeling "shut down" due to just the fun of technopathy. This fatigue will push him out of any place humming with broken energy and he'd be willing to try to help lend a hand in Dogtown. Careful he doesn't slice himself on a shard.
CW: There's real potential for infection, some lasting illness due to Tim Drake's Missing Spleen(tm), and more serious suicidal thoughts and behaviors from this kid.
→ WITHOUT A TRACE: On the upside, guess who has 2 thumbs and will wake up not knowing what the hell a Gotham or a Batman is. So, now y'all stuck with one of Tim's greatest wishes come true: that he leave the superhero business behind and become a simple normal person. → MISPLACED: hell yeah! Let's investigate Dogtown! wait what do you mean we're supposed to try and find the shards, Hickey just wants to poke around for the sake of poking around. Anyone who can rope him back on the case would be helpful.
→ MISSED CONNECTIONS: oh no, the internet's down, what a shame, says the man from the 1840s. and oh no, there's limited food, what a shame, says the man who was starving in the Arctic. Hickey's going to take all of this weirdly well because hey, at least the food he can get doesn't have lead in it (and he is absolutely fine with stealing food if needed). and look, worst comes to worst, they can totally just eat someone's dog, it'll be FINE. (it is not fine, someone still has a little bit of PTSD from canon and the longer this goes on, the more blatant Hickey will be about stealing food). All this is to say do you want someone to teach you card games? Or to do all the fun ways he learned to pass the time when frozen in the Arctic with no internet? Hickey's your man.
→ WITHOUT A TRACE: I'm definitely interested in the potential for permanent memory loss idea as that would be wonderful to help me get around a lovely little nasty canon problem. So Hickey's definitely going to forget a few things, one of which is his real name (surprise! Cornelius Hickey is an alias!) so that'll end up being a fun conversation.

→ MISPLACED: After getting shot, Rue is staying as far away from the park as possible, but would be happy to support their friends emotionally from a distance. They are helping out at Carter's little medical tent outside of Dogtown, so if you'd like Rue's help in patching anyone up, they can try!

→ MISINFORMED: Having nothing printed in 2020 in his possession, Hob won't immediately be aware of the rash of break-ins. Instead he has a question for the network. When ADI begins nudging people towards investigating Dogtown he'll make himself available to accompany anyone that needs a partner. Otherwise, he can be found assisting at Dr Carter's tent with Rue.
→ MISPLACED: Second verse same as the first: Hob will go with anyone from Investigations that needs a partner. He may poke around on his own as well, if a run-in with a bugbear in the forest sounds like fun!
→ MISSED CONNECTIONS: When the network goes down Hob will switch to hand-delivered letters or, when possible, simple face to face communication. He'll be happy to pass along notes if asked.
→ WITHOUT A TRACE: No permanent memory loss, but Hob will definitely be in a bit of slump after forgetting everything that's happened after he learned of Rue's "betrayal" at the Bloom.

→ WITHOUT A TRACE: This. THIS. Is going to be painful. Stargate Atlantis, for some reason, does tragic memloss extremely well. So John has been through this before. Once he realizes what’s up he’s going to warn everyone he can and write notes everywhere, on his arms, his clothes, everything. He’ll end up with full amnesia briefly at the worst of it. There may also be hilarity (or tragedy) when he forgets he has cat claws and re-discovers them. Haven’t decided yet if there are any permanent memories lost yet rip
