Event OOC - Connectivity

Connectivity - OOC
Summaries and content warnings for each prompt in the event are provided below. Please pose questions to the designated mod comment, and plot away!

➥ Misinformed: 16 January - Ongoing
➥ Misplaced: 17-31 January
➥ Missed Connections: 17-31January
➥ Without a Trace: 17-31 January

➥ Misinformed
(cw: theft, home invasion, paranoia)

Overnight, every printed and digital book, newspaper, and other printed reference material from 2020 vanishes. There is evidence of break-ins throughout town (from the very obvious to the subtle), but no sign of the (very specific) thieves can be found. Characters will find their own homes broken into if they have anything from that year. The Gloucester Public Library has put out a request for help with volunteer efforts to raise money to replace their lost goods while the police investigate. ADI higher-ups disapprove of that kind of community outreach when it might paint targets on civilians, but they won't stop anyone. Instead, ADI is encouraging its personnel to investigate Dogtown as the source of the problem.

➥ Misplaced
(cw: cuts, wounds, foreign objects embedded in flesh, supernaturally-induced apathy)

Neil Grace, Head of Security for ADI, sends out a mass text informing everyone that a Lonely artifact was brought to Gloucester and seems to have shattered. The field agent responsible for this failed to inform anyone for several days, though. They're dealing with that now and need help. Characters are tasked with going in pairs to search the park where the shattering happened. They find crystal shards embedded in the ground and trees, causing an unnatural quiet and emptiness to fall over the park. They also find them embedded in people. Those with crystal shards in them seem to be struggling with intense apathy, the sort that surrounds them and can even start to transfer to those they're talking to. Work quickly to remove the shards or you might find yourself losing the will to do anything about the problem.

➥ Missed Connections
(cw: socioeconomic disaster; scarcity)

Soon after Neil's message, the network goes down. Realization spreads, however, that it's not just ADI's internal network that's given up the ghost: internet and phone services throughout Gloucester and the surrounding area have abruptly gone down across the board. What first comes across as a mere inconvenience, if a big one, soon becomes an ongoing municipal catastrophe. Local businesses limp along on a cash-only basis while banks, medical centers, and emergency services struggle to remain functional, and characters will find that they are unable to access their ADI salaries due to businesses' and banks' inability to process payments and cash advances from their prepaid debit cards. While it's possible to reach unaffected areas within a day's drive, knock-on effects and panic-buying make food, medicine, and cash increasingly hard to come by even outside the radius of the outage.

➥ Without a Trace
(cw: reality warping, memory loss, potential for gaslighting or misperceptions of self or reality)

At varying rates, characters find their memory not quite what it used to be. Anything from friendships to relationships to the character’s homeworld might be forgotten overnight or slowly over time. The connections to places, people, or things characters have here might be able to restore or remind them of what they’re missing, with the potential for permanent memory loss possible.

Does the apathy effect fade once characters are away from someone with one of the shards embedded in them? Or once they're exposed, will it persist until the shard is removed?

If someone aligned with the Lonely picked up a shard, would anything different happen?

If Tim makes the day's drive to secure a reliable internet connection, there's a big chance he'll do so with the idea to search for Lovely Ren/ Ren Morimoto or related involvement in the blackout/ malfunctions. Would the dig turn up anything worthwhile?

Additionally, how is Pam Ruan reacting to all of this? For reasons.
