Apocalypse How - OOC

And here we have our final poll for the game! Check out this IC POST for details on what characters will be walking into at the center of the Wolfe House. They are now left with a choice: to stay in the world of Apocalypse How or to leave and go… somewhere. ICly, characters have no idea where they're going. Reyes Amador and Bonnie Gale think the portal they've created leads home, but it is OOCly up to players where their character will end up if they choose to leave. Leaving comes with the danger that characters will be taking a piece of the Fear Entities with them to the new place they go. The Fear Entities might arrive before your character and ruin a world before they get there. They might arrive years after your character is dead. Or they might arrive at the same instant as your character in a nascent state, eager to explore a new world and grow themselves on whatever fears and life they find.

For those left behind, you'll need to survive escaping the house. Once you do, you'll find that some amount of time has passed since you went into Dogtown. And if you are staying… you're keeping some piece of the Entities in this world. How strong their influence is will depend on how many left, taking pieces with them. If the majority of characters leave, the Entities will be much reduced in strength with Dogtown returning to a kind of weird place with the occasional Happening. The Entities and their cults will likely rebuild their strength with time, but that's a distant problem. If most characters stay, the threat from the Entities will remain and they will find themselves constant targets from various factions wanting to use them for apocalypse rituals of their own. The wheel keeps turning.

The more characters that leave, the shorter the time dilation. As a note on an OOC level, if the majority of characters choose to stay, they will be walking out of Dogtown 10-15 years after they went in.

For any characters who are staying, they are welcome to attempt to talk to or even kill Bonnie and Reyes in the ballroom. On an OOC level, we're going to say that they'll only be able to kill these NPCs after the players who want to talk to them have done so.

REMEMBER: Staying or going does not have to be an IC decision. Your character could be prevented from entering the portal or get sucked in against their will. You, the player, get to decide what happens to your character here!

I may have missed this, so: do characters ICly know they'll be bringing back a piece of the Entity that marked them if they go home?

They will not know at the outset, but NPC interactions will provide this information. Or other PCs may be able to provide this information.

Milo would rather go home than stay on Earth, but they would ultimately like to take Rue with them! If Rue feels strongly about going to one world or another, it won’t take much convincing so long as Milo’s allowed to stay with them

Elidibus is the sort to see how dangerous it would be for ANYONE to leave and consider the ramifications of trying to destroy the portal. Whether it is self-sustained now or killing Reyes would shut it down.

(Or for the sake of allowing player choice in staying or going, 'shut it down before too many can go through')

Anyway is this at all a viable option? Would there be any way of discerning, whether through the Eye or magic, what might happen now the portal is open, if someone were to try and shut it down? (Or even HOW to shut it down pre-emptively).

Elidibus would be able to tell that the portal is highly unstable and is collapsing in on itself already. It seems to have begun to collapse from the moment it was created. The snapping spiderwebs and the house shaking around them is the most obvious indicator there.

He'd be able to intuit that this thing will shake itself apart without him doing anything in particular. They have a matter of minutes, not hours. But if he wanted to speed the destruction, destroying the archway itself would probably collapse the portal. There's nothing that would give him a clear idea about whether killing Reyes would do anything. From Reyes' words, it's clear that all of them and their collected energy are fueling this portal.

As for whether it would be dangerous for anyone to leave... Eh? Maybe? Trying to Know that just sends his mind spinning down billions of potential paths and possibilities. There are far too many variables for the Eye to have any actual idea here about what the 'best' option would be. It's on Elidibus to decide what he thinks.

Elidibus has literally seen what a fear generated apocalypse wrought and he's not going to drag another to his world. While he'd arguably do so to another world that might have easier laws to bend, he would ultimately see the flaw in blind trust of this too-convenient route. Better to find another way or sacrifice himself for the greater good of his beloved home.

Better the Fears not be allowed to go elsewhere. He'll also probably mention this to others.

Kate doesn't want to drag the Entities back to her own world. She's seen the devastation and lost that have happened in Gloucester and around the rest of the world. She would never willingly bring that back with her.

Winter is staying. He doesn't trust the portal or the entities, and the remains of his people are mostly staying, anyway. Gloucester is his home now.

Rogers is also planning to stay! Both because he's decided to stay with Winter and because he doesn't want to spread this anywhere else, no matter how tempting it might have once been to get home.

Katrina refuses to let the Entities go home with her. The reason she cooperated with ADI at all in the beginning was to protect her people, so it seems counterproductive to open a door for the Dread Powers.

Also, the way things have been going between her and her tribe, she kind of doesn't fit in anymore. She's made a new tribe here in Gloucester, and ADI no longer opposes her transforming now and then.

She loves y'all, even if she doesn't quite yet understand 'love' as a concept.

Rue will be making the very heartbreaking decision to stay. Rather they stay and suffer in an attempt to make this world better than to run and hide and hope the Entities don't catch up with them again.

Mercy will be following Aelwyn into the portal. She will miss her friends here deeply, but she can't let the woman she's fallen in love with go on her own. Mercy knows that Aelwyn is teetering on the edge of sanity.
