Event OOC - All In Your Head

All In Your Head - OOC
Summaries and content warnings for each prompt in the event are provided below. Please pose questions to the designated mod comment, and plot away!

➥ Night's Embrace: 16-18 March
➥ Illuminating: 19-23 March
➥ Walking Hell: 22-28 March
➥ Dunn With This: 29-31 March

➥ Night's Embrace
(cw: supernaturally-induced hysteria/intense emotion; violence; maiming; assault; burglary; murder; implied violence against children)

Serious criminal activity is on the rise around town as the shadow woman continues her campaign against the ordinary citizens of Gloucester. Her touch has induced vandalism, assault, and even murderous activities amongs the general populace. And then the lights go out. On the 16th, Jeff's fool-hardy assistance will result in a town-wide blackout that only magnifies the shadow woman's powers, granting her the ability to access ADI and wreak havoc within HQ and the Housing complex. No shadow is safe. Stay in the light... and have a good flashlight with you because it's the only thing that seems to stop the shadow woman coming.

➥ Illuminating
(cw: derogatory language; mention of long-term imprisonment and murder attempts)

Nia Lehrer, Warden of ADI, returns from a trip to refocus everyone and provide an explanation about who actually escaped from ADI's holding cells last month. It is Katie Dunn, a highly dangerous avatar for the Dark. Nia's here to provide whatever answers people are looking for and to get people working to thwart Katie's chaos throughout the town with her blackouts and her touch of madness. This means tapping Administration and Public Relations folks to requisition generators to stop the blackouts from actually causing serious problems and spinning up stories to provide rational explanations for the blackout. If your character is particularly creative, now is their time to shine! Players can provide their 'stories' for why the blackouts and increased crime are happening in the QUESTIONS section below, and we'll be incorporating those into our Headline News items next week. There will also be roles for anyone seeking to help with delivery of supplies and generally patrol the town setting up extra lights everywhere they can.

Characters staying in ADI Housing or ADI HQ may begin to notice that the direct attacks on these buildings have almost completely stopped following the all-hands meeting. Those at Bonnie's Flophouse will still be in danger from the shadow woman–Katie Dunn–running around town, though.

➥ Walking Hell
(cw: altered mental state, hallucinations)

In response to ADI's efforts to depower her, Katie lashes out by trapping all PCs, as well as non-native ADI NPCs (and a handful of native NPCs), in a landscape of waking nightmares that fall upon them intermittently whenever they are outside ADI headquarters or housing. They will be awake, although they might not realize they are awake, and characters can wander (or blunder) through more than one nightmare situation as they physically move through the town. The nightmares can last for any amount of time (including days). Anyone not experiencing the nightmare (including other PCs) will not be able to see what the character is reacting to or see any sort of wounds they suffer while stuck in the nightmare. Two characters in the same place who are both stuck in the nightmare will see the same thing (and there is a lot of player freedom to decide what the nightmare patches consist of.).

➥ Dunn With This
(cw: attempted capture and imprisonment; violence)

Characters with field or combat experience are requested to help as ADI goes on the offensive to attempt to recapture Katie Dunn in the absence of a known method of killing her. As Katie is capable of splitting herself into multiple shades, it will take a coordinated effort to catch all of the iterations of the shadow woman now wreaking havoc in the city. The standard plan handed down from above is for one or more characters to act as bait and lure her into a trap. However, as this is the method by which she was originally captured by ADI, fears abound that she may see through the traps. Characters are therefore welcome to engineer their own alternate methods for dealing with Katie. Alternate tactics that require NPC support may be submitted to the QUESTIONS section below for review. Encounters with Katie will be played out with NPC replies.

Please note that the outcome of all encounters with Katie must be decided by March 31, as the outcome of this event will impact the April TDM. If threads have not reached their natural conclusion by that date, players will be asked to decide OOCly on the outcome (and are welcome to continue to tag to reach that conclusion ICly).

A Handy Plotting Form

in "Waking Hell", if characters stuck in a nightmare get injured in the nightmare, are they going to carry that physical wound once they're out of it again?
henchgal: (yeah right)

Is it possible that if a character has lingering trauma from a past event that some of that event’s trappings or themes might show up in a nightmare patch for them in this event?

➥ Jeff
Canon: Original (Info)
Housing: Bonnie's, sometimes
What ADI Department(s) Does the Character Work In?: None! He finally wandered away from the ADI fully after last month's event.

NIGHT'S EMBRACE: Oops, Jeff caused a blackout. MY BAD, GUYS. He's super sorry. I do have a prompt of him being suspicious and luring people out to dark places in his latest log, so while the actual blackout is set in stone for event purposes, characters are absolutely welcome to connect the dots and realize he played a role in this chaos. (Or, if they want to participate in the chaos, they're welcome to get suckered by him and attacked by the shadow woman.)

Unfortunately, though, he'll be otherwise indisposed after triggering the blackout, due to dying.

ILLUMINATING: n/a i don't think avatars are invited to this party :(

WALKING HELL: I need to see if embracing the power of delusion and becoming an avatar of the Spiral would have any effect on the waking nightmares, where Jeff's concerned. IF SO: he will be out and about and alternatively helpful or making things worse, depending on... idk how much he likes you, I guess.

DUNN WITH THIS: Good news: dying and being reborn has given him a change in perspective, and he's not eager to help Katie anymore! Bad news: he still hates the ADI. But as an avatar, Jeff's got some shiny new powers that might help, and he could be convinced to assist in taking her out, because he's at a crossroads of "do I use my eldritch horror powers to wreak havoc on the world, or do I use them to take out the competition for some nominal good?" Living that chaotic neutral life.

ANYWAY tldr i have no firm ideas beyond "Jeff caused a blackout and died lmao" but i'm open to anything

As a newborn avatar of the Spiral, would the waking nightmare hallucinations hit Jeff any differently from other characters? Mainly I'm wondering if the fact that he's riding especially high on the power of delusion and insanity ~imagination~ would influence the nightmares in his immediate vicinity, whether granting him a greater awareness of it, or being able to affect the contents of the nightmare to a minor degree. (For extra horrors)

Like, lucid dreaming for monsters.

AN EDIT WITH ANOTHER QUESTION (i'm sorry, i'm both TOO EXCITED to get my avatar on, and also TOO PARANOID ABOUT DOING IT WRONG):

ok so I know most avatars just look like normal people, and I do want Jeff to continue looking like his normal self (though maybe with a bitchin' and possibly weird looking scar from his death) but also is it cool to give him a bit of a Tell? Something that's not immediately noticeable or obvious, so he doesn't instantly land on the ADI's KILL ON SIGHT list, but will grant other characters the opportunity to put two and two together.

Mainly I was thinking, to go along with the Spiral being tied to lies and deceit, something like his reflection (and other images, ie videos and photos) always showing different expressions from the one he's currently wearing. Is that allowable, or is it not quite in line with the lore?

➥ Ainsley Whitly
Canon: Prodigal Son (2x7)
Housing: ADI Apts, C3
What ADI Department(s) Does the Character Work In?: Media Relations
Permissions: HERE

NIGHT'S EMBRACE: So because of things happening & planned for over here, Ainsley will (recklessly) be out searching for the shadow woman! During that thread with Jeff, she's gonna end up attacked by her and it'll be a grand time, I'm SURE. She conveniently did not tell anyone she was doing anything, sorry, Malcolm.

ILLUMINATING: Since she's taken up with media relations for her job, she'll be helping spin some news stories out there, so I gotta give this a think 🤔 I was a journalism major once, maybe I can come up with something fun to submit for that. Count her out on patrols and delivering supplies because she is not going out if she can help it after that attack >_>

WALKING HELL: I don't know yet, but god I love nightmare stuff. I will figure something out!!

DUNN WITH THIS: Yeah, no, she's out. She's not going near this woman again, sorry, y'all.

➥ Malcolm Bright
Canon: Prodigal Son
Housing: ADI Apartment B1
What ADI Department(s) Does the Character Work In?: Investigations
Permissions: HERE

NIGHT'S EMBRACE: Malcolm always, always carries a flashlight; it's his favourite investigative tool. Now that there are murders going on, he's more interested in investigating; sorry he's so macabre. He might actually be out and about and if you need some light to stay behind, he's your man.
ILLUMINATING: He will help set up lights, especially if his friends are into it.
WALKING HELL: Nightmares. Maybe we'll see Dr Whitly again >.>
DUNN WITH THIS: He's not so much with the assassinating, but he'd be willing to act as bait if nobody stops him.....

abrightboy: (consider this)

[personal profile] abrightboy 2022-03-15 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Are people going to know he died? How is he going to look when he's an avatar? Will there be noticeable differences? TELL ME EVERYTHING i want something here.

Two questions for Dunn With This:

1) As an avatar of the dark, does radient/light damage have more effect on her, if hit with it?

2) Garner has an ability called 'Brand of Castigation' (detailed here once you scroll down a bit) that would allow him to 'track' her location. Would he be able to hit her to even place the brand, would it work, and for how long (she's obviously more powerful than him, it makes sense if she can shake it off)

➥ Garner
Canon: Original
Housing: ADI C-1
What ADI Department(s) Does the Character Work In?: Investigations, Security
Permissions: HERE

NIGHT'S EMBRACE: Garner can navigate without a light, but that sure doesn't keep him safe from what's in the darkness! Want a little help navigating around in exchange for helping keep a guy safe from darkness monsters?

ILLUMINATING: He's...completely useless with media things or being a creative force. He can however deliver supplies and will absolutely be patrolling if anyone wants a good old fashioned talking thread!

WALKING HELL: He won't be able to see the hallucinations, but he'll be able to hear anything going on. I'd be more than happy to have him wander into someone else's nightmare to try and help them! If anyone wants one of his, they'd likely feature mass murder/destruction of a small village (including children) or

DUNN WITH THIS: Garner's definitely going to go on the hunt! Waiting on a couple questions regarding special abilities he has to help with this, but even if completely depowered, he'll be interested in hunting down a dangerous 'creature' it's what he's made for. Anyone willing and able to help him/team up with him will be more than welcome!

Only in this case "things" means "people"

➥ Manji
Canon: Blade of the Immortal
Housing: ADI C-1
What ADI Department(s) Does the Character Work In?: Investigations
Permissions: HERE

NIGHT'S EMBRACE: Flashlight? Manji won't think to grab one of those. Good old flickering candle and flame for him. Of course once someone teaches him what one is and how much more protective a flashlight can be he'll start using one.

ILLUMINATING: Manji is still upset how hush ADI had been about who and why they had someone locked up. It sat uneasily on him, but once he sees people suffering from the nightmares or having their minds tampered with to make people more violent/willing to vandalize he'll be ready to side more with ADI once again.

WALKING HELL: Manji has a lot of trauma in his life that could be turned into nightmares. Mostly involving brutal murders and infesting worms. Perhaps zombies of the people he's killed, or maybe it's enemies from his past attacking, or could go with something more abstract and avoid stuff from home!

DUNN WITH THIS: Unfortunately Manji's only real method of attack is the normal slashing and stabbing with no magical qualities to it. He's happy to give that a try if needed, but he might be more helpful as bait. He's immortal and can't die so he's a bit reckless with his life. He knows that being bait here could actually put his mind at risk more than his body, but he's interested to find out if his immortality might be able to repair his mind if it does get damaged. (Spoilers: No, that's not how it works.)

Could definitely do something with night's embrace if you didn't have other plans for getting her help, even if it's only interim stuff, Garner knows some basic field medicine!

Otherwise...hit me with that nightmare stuff- he won't be able to see whatever nightmare she's going through, but he'll be able to hear it...
